Question

Does the type pairing survive, and if not, what beats it?

Current pairing is Cinzel (display, carved Roman capitals) over Jost (body, geometric sans), with IBM Plex Mono for code, all self-hosted as woff2 in _tokens.scss. The owner likes it and is willing to test alternatives. It stays unless something measurably beats it.

Test against the re-tuned north star:

  • Does Cinzel still read right for medieval-noir-with-clockwork, or does it read purely Roman-classical? It is a Trajan-lineage face, which is antiquity rather than renaissance.
  • Does Jost hold up at length in a dark palette? It is geometric, and geometric sans faces can get monotonous over long forum threads.
  • Would a transitional or old-style serif for body text suit a wiki-heavy site better than any sans?
  • Is a third face justified for small engraved labels, or does that just cost weight?
  • Weight cost: how many woff2 files ship today, and what any change would add. Self-hosting means the budget is visible and real.
  • Do the game-site chrome patterns from the research ticket imply a type register the current pairing cannot hit?

Any alternative is tested on a real dense page in the live stack, not in a specimen. Resolution either confirms the current pairing — a perfectly good outcome — or names a replacement with its weights and file sizes.
